South Africa: Pro-Zuma demonstration in Durban April 6

Event

Thousands of people - including members of religious organizations and pro-Zuma lobby groups - are expected to march in Durban on Friday, April 6, in support of former South African President Jacob Zuma. Supporters plan to organize a night vigil on Thursday, April 5, and will march towards the Durban High Court, where Zuma will face corruption charges related to a decades-old arms deal, the following day. An increased security presence will be deployed throughout the city.

Context

Zuma was deputy president at the time of the 1990s arms deal. Charges were filed against Zuma but then dropped by national prosecutors shortly before he successfully ran for president in 2009. Since his election nine years ago, his opponents have fought to have the charges reinstated. Zuma countered with his own legal challenges but prosecutors re-filed the charges after Zuma was forced from power by his own party in February 2018.

Criminals may be armed; do not resist if confronted and do not look your attacker(s) directly in the eye. Drive with windows closed, doors locked, and all personal possessions hidden from sight.
