USA: Anti-police brutality protests possible in NYC /update 1

Protests possible in New York and elsewhere following April 4 killing of a black man by police; keep abreast of the situation

Warning

Event

The recent killing of an African-American man by police in New York could lead to anti-racism/anti-police brutality protests in the city and elsewhere in the US in the coming hours and days. The incident, in which an unarmed man was killed by police in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Crown Heights, occurred around 17:00 (local time) on Wednesday, March 4.

Related protests continue to be held in Sacramento (California) following a similar killing that occurred on March 18.

Context

A number of events involving allegations of police brutality against African-Americans have sparked unrest in recent years, starting with the August 2014 killing of an African-American man in Ferguson. Since then, other police shootings (or acquittals of police officers involved in such shootings) have regularly resulted in demonstrations of various sizes, some ending in clashes.

Advice

Individuals are advised to keep abreast of the situation and avoid any demonstrations as a precaution.
