Informational

Event

The Seoul Central District Court is scheduled to a begin a televised hearing for the verdict and possible sentencing of former President Park Geun-hye at 14:10 (local time) on Friday, April 6. Park faces a total of 18 charges, including bribery, coercion, and abuse of power - allegations that ultimately led to her removal from office in 2017; it is unlikely that she will attend the hearing. The prosecution has demanded that Park serve 30 years in prison and pay a fine of USD 111 million (KRW 118.5 billion) if found guilty. Pro- and anti-Park demonstrations, and a heightened security presence and consequent traffic disruptions, are possible in Seoul and elsewhere in South Korea ahead of and after the hearing.

Context

South Korea's Constitutional Court unanimously motioned for Park's removal from office - which took place on March 10, 2017 - over a corruption scandal involving interference in government affairs by her close friend Choi Soon-sil, including alleged collusion to extort millions of dollars from companies such as Samsung. Previous protests in support of Park have turned violent.

Advice

Individuals present in Seoul on Friday, April 6, are advised to avoid the vicinity of the Seoul Central District Court, where associated rallies may take place. Avoid public gatherings and anticipate traffic restrictions in affected areas, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
