Germany: Airport and public transit strikes April 10 /update 2

Staff at Frankfurt (FRA), Munich (MUC), Cologne-Bonn (CGN), and Bremen (BRE) airports on strike April 10, along with public transit workers in Cologne

Warning

Event

Ground staff, notably security personnel, will be on strike at Frankfurt (FRA), Munich (MUC), Cologne-Bonn (CGN), and Bremen (BRE) international airports on Tuesday, April 10, from 05:00 until 18:00 (local time). Significant flight disruptions (delays, cancelations) and considerably delays at security checkpoints and baggage claim/drop-off points are likely. Lufthansa Group airlines have already canceled 800 flights scheduled for Tuesday.

Furthermore, public transportation workers (among others) are set to stage a strike in the Cologne region from 10:00 on the same day. Increased traffic congestion and demand for taxis are likely as commuters seek out other modes of transportation. Associated demonstrations are also scheduled; marchers will gather at three points - Ottoplatz, Willy-Brandt-Platz, and Hans-Böckler-Platz - before converging on Heumarkt. Some 20,000 people are expected to take part.

Context

Numerous "warning strikes" have been held throughout the country in recent weeks and could continue in the lead-up to the next round of negotiations on April 15 between public sector workers and local governments.

Advice

Travelers are advised to confirm flight statuses, allow for extra time to reach their destinations, and avoid protests as a precaution.
