Madagascar: Opposition rally in Antananarivo April 21

Event

Opposition members of parliament (MPs) are set to stage a rally on Saturday, April 21, in the capital Antananarivo in front of the City Hall to denounce new electoral laws. However, the municipal police have threatened to revoke authorization for the rally. A heightened security presence, as well as traffic disruptions, is likely during the event and clashes with security forces cannot be ruled out.

A related demonstration that took place in Toasmasina on April 14 was dispersed by security forces. Further protests are likely in the coming weeks.

Context

On April 3, pro-government MPs passed three controversial electoral bills; opposition MPs boycotted the vote. The laws were approved on April 12 by the senate, following which opposition supporters took to the High Constitutional Court to call for the annulment of the laws.
