Nicaragua: Clashes during rival protests April 18

Clashes broke out during rival protests held in the capital Managua and the city of León on Wednesday, April 18, leaving several people injured and resulting in material damage. The demonstrations, also held in other Nicaraguan cities, were held both in favor and to denounce recent reforms to the social security system, officialized earlier in the day and set to come into effect on July 1. Anti-reform protesters reportedly came under attack by government supporters. Further protests, with the potential to turn violent and/or result in traffic disruptions, are likely in the coming days and weeks.
