Strong storms hit northern and northeastern Thailand April 26; other provinces to be affected as well April 26-28

Warning

Event

The north and northeast of Thailand have been hit with strong summer storms currently battering the country as of Thursday, April 26. Violent thunderstorms and wind have particularly impacted the districts of Huai Mek, Kham Muang, Tha Khantho, and Yang Talatin in Kalasin province, Wiang Sa district in Nan province, and Dong Charoen district in Phichit, where houses have been damaged.

According to the Thai Meteorological Department, further storms are expected to touch the upper part of the country - including the capital Bangkok - through Saturday, April 28. A comprehensive list of affected areas is available here. Associated power outages, localized flooding, damages to property, and transportation disruptions are possible.

Context

The Thai Meteorological Department initially issued a warning for strong summer storms affecting the entire country for April 24-27.

Advice

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, confirm travel reservations, and remain vigilant when driving in hazardous conditions.

In the event of flooding, remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
