South Korea: Busan records highest particulate level in country in 2017

Busan records highest particulate matter pollution level in South Korea in 2017

Informational

Event

Busan recorded the highest level of particulate matter air pollution in South Korea in 2017, averaging 26 micrograms per cubic meters of PM2.5 (particulate matter less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter). In comparison, Seoul, Incheon, and Ulsan registered 25 micrograms, Gwangju measured 24, Daegu measured 23, and Daejeon recorded 21. According to local officials, Busan's high level of particulate matter pollution is mainly attributable to sulfur oxides emitted by ships and dockyard equipment. Though the Busan city office has announced measures to curb pollution (monitoring emissions, planting trees), elevated levels of air pollution are expected to persist in the city in the coming summer months.

Advice

Individuals present in the Busan area - particularly those with existing respiratory issues - are advised to monitor the situation and to seek medical attention if needed.
