Taiwan: Live-fire drills planned June 4-8

Armed forces to conduct live-fire drills June 4-8; increased military presence expected

Informational

Event

Taiwan will hold its annual live-fire military drill, codenamed “Han Kuang” from June 4-8. According to the Ministry of National Defense, the drills will practice thwarting a Chinese invasion, simulating a surprise coastal assault to reflect the increased military threat from Beijing. In addition to simulating repelling an invading force, Taiwan will also practice emergency repairs to air bases during an assault and using civilian-operated drones into military exercises. An increase military presence and possible disruptions are anticipated during the drills.

Context

China held live-fire drills in mid-April in the Taiwan Strait, the narrow waterway separating the Chinese mainland from Taiwan. The Taiwanese Defense Ministry spokesman told reporters that this year’s choice of simulation was chosen taking into consideration China’s recent movements in the region.

Advice

Individuals in the area are advised to keep abreast of the situation and to avoid all areas where military drills or operations are taking place.
