Pakistan: Heatwave leaves three dead in Sindh as of May 1

Heatwave leaves at least three people dead in Dadu district (Sindh province) as of May 1; power outages reported

Warning

Event

An ongoing heatwave had left at least three people dead in Dadu district (Sindh province) as of Tuesday, May 1. The heatwave - which has brought temperatures of 49°C (120°F) in Dadu district and above 41°C (106°F) elsewhere in the province - also forced the closure of several businesses, markets, and offices on Tuesday in areas throughout Dadu district, and prompted power outages of up to 12 hours. More than 50 people were admitted to hospitals due to the heat. Additional business closures and power outages are expected in the coming hours and days as the heatwave is forecast to continue.

Context

Periodic power outages generally exacerbate extreme summer heat in Pakistan, including in Sindh province. In particular, Karachi has been affected by extremely high summer temperatures in recent years. In 2015, a heatwave in Karachi left at least 1000 people dead.

Advice

Individuals present in Sindh province, particularly in Dadu district and Karachi, are advised to monitor local weather reports, stay hydrated (drink at least 1.5 liters of water per day and avoid alcohol), and avoid spending time in direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day (generally from 12:00 to 16:00). Be especially on guard against symptoms of dehydration or heat stroke in young children and seniors, as they are particularly vulnerable. Do not hesitate to contact emergency services if necessary.
