Canada: Water levels forecast to drop in New Brunswick May 14-15 /update 2
Water levels to drop below flood stage in most of New Brunswick by May 14-15; some roads begin to reopen to traffic
Event
Water levels are forecast to drop to below flood stage across most parts of New Brunswick by Monday, May 14, or Tuesday, May 15. Though dozens of roads remained closed in the province remained closed as of Saturday, May 12, some have begun to be reopened to traffic following inspection. Notably, road conditions in Fredericton have mostly returned to normal as of Saturday. Also, the Trans-Canada Highway was reopened to traffic between Fredericton and Moncton on the afternoon of Friday, May 11 (local time).
Lingering transportation disruptions (including road obstructions and closures) are expected in the coming days as water levels recede and recovery efforts continue.
Context
The recent flooding has reportedly been among the most severe in the province's history. Authorities estimate that between 2000 and 3000 people have been displaced by the flooding, including residents from Fredericton to Saint John. The Canadian Coast Guard has been called in to assist with ongoing recovery efforts.
Advice
Individuals present in affected areas are advised to keep abreast of the situation, avoid areas directly hit by flooding, prepare for associated transportation disruptions, and adhere to any orders issued by the local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders). Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
