Panama: Flooding in Panama City June 5

Flooding in Panama City causes traffic disruptions June 5; further rainfall forecast in the coming days

Warning

Event

Flooding due to recent heavy rain has caused traffic disruptions in the capital Panama City as of Tuesday, June 5. Major thoroughfares in the area, including Avenida Domingo Díaz (San Miguelito), Vía Frangipani, and Vía España, have been flooded and multiple trees have fallen in the Obarrio neighborhood, further obstructing traffic. Flooding has also been reported in the provinces of Panamá Oeste and Colón. Continued rainfall is forecast in Panama City and other parts of the country in the coming days. Consequent flooding and traffic disruptions are to be anticipated in the near-term.

Context

Flooding and landslides are relatively common during Panama's long rainy season, which extends from March until December.

Advice

Individuals present in Panama City and other affected areas are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult. Additionally, because floodwater may also contain wastewater or chemical products, all items having come into contact with the water should be washed and disinfected and any foodstuffs discarded.
