South Africa: Public sector workers cancel June 11 nationwide strike /update 1

The Public Servants Association of South Africa (PSA) has canceled their planned June 11 nationwide strike. Potential associated protests and traffic disruptions are no longer expected to affect areas across the country.

Context

The PSA originally called for an indefinite and nationwide strike to take place starting June 11 to demand an increase in wages and to protest a public service wage bill. The suspension of the nationwide strike comes after two-thirds of trade unions planning to participate accepted government-proposed salary increases over the coming years at a Public Service Coordinating Bargaining Council (PSCBC) meeting on June 8.
