Mexico: Water shortages in Mexico City expected through at least June 15

Mexico City to endure water shortages through at least June 15 due to dry and hot conditions and increased demand; conserve and stock up on water

Warning

Event

As of Monday, June 11, 900,000 people in Mexico City are without running water due to a recent heat wave, drought, and increased agricultural demand. Water shortages have been reported in seven of Mexico City's 16 boroughs: Iztacalco, Iztapalapa, Benito Juarez, Cuauhtemoc, Tlalpan, Azcapotzalco, and Venustiano Carranza. Tanker trucks have been deployed to distribute water in the affected areas until service is restored - at earliest on Friday, June 15, according to local authorities.

Context

Local authorities expect full water service to be restored two to three days after rain resumes, currently forecast on June 12.

Advice

Individuals in Mexico City are advised to conserve water, stock up on bottled water, keep abreast of the situation via local media outlets, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. water-rationing measures).
