Portugal: Nationwide train workers’ strike June 12-13 /update 1

Comboios de Portugal (CP) workers slated to stage nationwide train strike June 12-13; significant rail transportation disruptions expected

Warning

Event

Workers from Comboios de Portugal (CP) - the national rail operator - represented by several trade unions are planning to stage a nationwide train strike from Tuesday, June 12, to Wednesday, June 13. Though minimum levels of train service are required to be maintained, delays and cancelations are expected on all CP services across the country, except for on the urban train services of Porto. Consequent increased demand for alternate forms of transportation (i.e. road vehicles) is expected in affected areas on the days of the strike, as well as associated traffic disruptions.

On a related note, vehicular traffic will be restricted from 18:00 (local time) onward in the center of Lisbon on the strike days, with only public transportation allowed to enter the area.

Context

CP workers are carrying out the strike to protest a government move to reduce the number of staff operating on the train from two staff members to one.

Advice

Individuals in Portugal are advised to monitor developments to the situation, confirm rail transportation reservations, and allow for additional time to reach your destination.
