Uruguay: National strikes and protests June 13

National teacher and health worker strikes June 13; protests in Montevideo

Warning

Event

Unions representing primary and secondary school teachers and university professors have called for a national strike to take place on Wednesday, June 13. An associated march will be held in the capital Montevideo on Wednesday evening; protesters will gather beginning at 18:00 (local time) at the Universidad de la República (Udelar) campus before marching to the Torre Ejecutiva, the presidential office located at Plaza Independencia. The gathering will likely remain peaceful but low-intensity violence (minor clashes, vandalism, etc.) cannot be ruled out. Localized traffic disruptions are also possible. A 48-hour teacher strike has also been called for June 20-21.

Health workers will also be on strike June 13. Services could be limited hospitals and medical centers, with doctor’s appointments at risk of being canceled and non-emergency cases turned away. Striking health workers will also hold a demonstration, marching from the Torre Ejecutiva to the Obelisco beginning at 10:00.

Advice

Individuals present in Uruguay are advised to avoid all demonstrations as a precaution, confirm doctor’s appointments, and be prepared for longer waiting times at medical facilities.
