Taiwan: Heavy rains expected June 13-17 /update 1

Heavy rain across the country June 13-17; localized flooding and travel disruptions possible

Warning

Event

The Taiwanese Central Weather Bureau has issued a warning over heavy rain forecast on Friday, June 15, in the south of the country due to a tropical storm. Up to 35 cm (13 in) of precipitation is expected in Pingtung and the Hengchun Peninsula, while up to 8 cm (3 in) is forecast for Kaohsiung, Tainan, Taitung, and parts of Yilan. Other areas such as Chiyai, Hualien, Nantou, Penghu, Taichung, and Yunlin, will also experience heavy rain. Continued heavy rainfall is expected across the country through June 20. Localized flooding and related travel disruptions are possible during this period.

Context

Torrential rain is common during the tropical storm/typhoon season in the western Pacific Ocean, which typically runs from May to October.

Advice

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to confirm travel reservations, to keep abreast of weather forecasts, and to adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products.
