Slovakia: Rally planned in Bratislava June 22

Civil society group announces large rally in Bratislava June 22; localized traffic disruptions anticipated

Warning

Event

Civil society activists are expected to stage a public rally beginning at 17:00 (local time) in Bratislava on Friday, June 22. Localized traffic disruptions - including public transportation disruptions and road closures - are expected in the vicinity of Staré Mesto (Old Town). Additional rallies are planned concurrently in other cities such as Banská Bystrica and Košice. A heightened security presence is also expected near the demonstration.

Context

The rally comes amid a series of anti-government protests organized by the "For a Decent Slovakia" group, which began in early March and has continued through April and May. These demonstrations began as an outcry against the murder of a local investigative journalist and his fiancée, but have grown into a wider denunciation of government corruption and general ineffectiveness. The June 22 rally is intended to demonstrate the continued vigor of the "For a Decent Slovakia" movement. Earlier protests led to the resignation of Prime Minister Robert Fico.

Advice

Individuals in Bratislava, and Slovakia more generally, are advised to avoid all large demonstrations as a precaution and allow for additional time to travel in the vicinity of such gatherings. Adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
