Madagascar: Independence Day celebrations June 26

Event

Madagascar will hold nationwide Independence Day celebrations on Tuesday, June 26. Events will be held throughout the country, including a one-hour military parade at Antananarivo's Mahamasina Stadium starting at 10:00 (local time). An increased security presence as well as commercial and traffic disruptions are likely throughout the day.

Furthermore, opposition protests, ongoing for more than two months, are likely at the Place du 13 May amid high political tensions over the electoral process.

Context

The anti-government protests are linked to three controversial electoral bills passed in early April by the parliament. During an opposition march held on April 21, police fired teargas at demonstrators, fatally wounding two people. On May 3, the High Constitutional Court ruled the three laws unconstitutional; however, protests continued despite the ruling.

On June 11, President Hery Rajaonarimampianina announced that a new "consensus" government had been formed under new appointed Prime Minister Christian Ntsay. However, opposition leaders continue to call for key cabinet positions to be held by members of their party.
