South Korea: Typhoon to bring heavy rainfall through July 2 /update 2
Typhoon Prapiroon forecast to bring heavy rain and damaging winds to South Korea through July 2; flooding, power outages, transportation disruptions possible

After forming on Friday, June 29, off the eastern coast of the Philippines, Typhoon Prapiroon was located south-southeast of Okinawa (Japan) as of Saturday, June 30, bringing sustained winds of about 80 km/h (50 mph) and wind gusts of approximately 96 km/h (65 mph) offshore. The storm is forecast to pick up strength as it continues on its northward trajectory into Sunday, but weaken before its projected landfall on the Korean Peninsula on Monday, July 2. However, heavy rainfall - with the potential for flooding - is expected to precede Prapiroon's arrival in South Korea in the coming days, with 7.6 to 15.2 cm (3 to 6 in) of rain expected to fall across much of South Korea and southern North Korea between Saturday and Monday; some areas may experience up to 30.5 cm (12 in) during this period, and Jeju Island could see up to 40 cm (15.7 in) of precipitation. Damaging wind is also to be expected in affected areas. Although Prapiroon is expected to weaken en route to Korea, heavy rain and wind is expected to continue after its arrival, accompanied by a heightened risk of flooding and landslides. Associated power outages and transportation disruptions, including flight delays and cancelations in affected areas, are possible.
The South Korean meteorological authorities have issued warnings as Typhoon Prapiroon approaches the south of the country; the alerts are currently set to remain in effect through Monday, July 2. Stormy conditions due to a separate weather system are also forecast for the south of the country (e.g. Mokpo and Chinhae) beginning on July 2, prolonging the threat of localized flooding through the week.
