India: Monsoon rain and transport disruptions in Mumbai July 3

Parts of Mumbai (Maharashtra state; population 20 million) flooded by heavy rain; transportation disruptions

Warning

Event

Several areas of India’s financial capital Mumbai (Maharashtra state) have been flooded as of Tuesday, July 3, due to heavy monsoon rains. The flooding has led to major traffic congestion throughout the city, as well as flight disruptions at Mumbai International Airport (BOM). In the western suburb of Andheri, the rain damaged a bridge that partially collapsed, injuring five people and halting commuter trains. Schools and colleges were closed.

The Indian Meteorological Department expects heavy rain to continue in parts of Mumbai and Thane through July 5, with some level of rainfall forecast through the end of the week. Mumbai Police have issued an advisory warning of traffic congestion.

Advice

People present in Mumbai in the coming days are advised to monitor weather forecasts, refrain from traveling to flooded areas, and follow any instructions issued by local authorities.
