Peru: Teacher strike to continue despite June 20 ban /update 2

Teachers vow to continue strike despite government declaring it illegal on June 20; associated protests possible in coming days

Warning

Event

On Wednesday, June 20, Peru’s Ministry of Education (Minedu) declared the indefinite national strike launched by teachers on June 18 to be illegal. Despite the government’s decision, teachers vowed to continue their strike. Minedu also announced that it will start replacing teachers who do not show up for work starting on Thursday, June 21. Associated protests are likely in the coming days, particularly in areas where replacement teachers are employed. An increased security presence and clashes are possible in the vicinity of any demonstrations.

Context

Teachers launched the strike on June 18 to demand better working conditions. While participation rates on Monday were relatively low - around 5 percent on average nationwide - associated protests were held, including in the capital Lima. The highest participation rates were recorded in the provinces/regions of Amazonas, San Martín, Madre de Dios, and Lima.

Advice

Individuals present in Peru are advised to avoid all protests as a precaution.
