Nepal: Heavy rains cause deadly flooding July 1-3 /update 1

Recent monsoon rains have caused deadly flooding and landslides across Nepal from Sunday, July 1, through Tuesday, July 3. According to government officials, at least 17 people have died as of July 3, and mid-western and eastern Nepal have been most severely impacted. On Monday, July 2, two people were killed in Rolpa district and another three in Banke district. Hundreds of people were forces to evacuate from communities in Tarai district due to flooding. Over 1500 Indian pilgrims have also been stranded in Humla district due to severe weather. Further flooding may take place in the coming days as monsoon rains are forecast to continue. Lingering transportation disruptions are possible in affected areas.

Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded. Be aware that the risk of contracting water- and mosquito-borne diseases tends to rise after periods of heavy rain.
