India: June 30 Delhi Metro strike stopped by court intervention /update 1

The Delhi High Court put a stay on the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation's (DMRC) employee strike that was set to begin on June 30 and expected to shut down all metro services in the city. According to the High Court, the employees have valid demands but stated that the halting of a public utility used by 2.5 million people would be too disruptive. The court also said that the employees did not provide sufficient notice for the strike.

Context

The DMRC non-executive employees announced on Wednesday, June 27, that they will go on an indefinite strike if their demands were not met within two days. Some of the non-executive staff of the DMRC have been demonstrating through hunger strikes and sit-ins since June 19.

The DRMC employees are demanding the right to form a union, a revision of salaries and pay grades, payment of debts, and fixed guidelines for firing an employee.
