India: Heavy rain forecast across southern half of country July 6 /update 1

India Meteorological Department issues weather advisories for July 6 due to forecast heavy rain across 14 states, primarily in south; rain expected to continue, generally move northeast in coming days

The India Meteorological Department issued weather advisories for 14 regions for Friday, July 6, warning of heavy rainfall in these areas amid the ongoing monsoon season. A weather warning (indicating impacted individuals should take action) is in effect for the Konkan Goa coastline (including Mumbai) in western Maharashtra state for July 6 and 7. Heavy to very heavy rains are expected in parts of the rest of the state (Madhya Maharashtra and Vidarbha). Isolated heavy rain is forecast over Chhattisgarh, Sub­Himalayan West Bengal & SikkimAssam & Meghalaya, NagalandManipurMizoram & TripuraOdishaGujaratMarathawada (central Maharashtra), Telangana, and Coastal & North Interior Karnataka. The weather system is expected to move in a generally northeasterly fashion in the coming days, bringing heavy rains to affected areas and prompting various weather advisories through at least July 10. There are widespread reports of transportation disruptions (notably road closures), and some flight delays have also been reported in recent days (e.g. at Indira Gandhi International Airport [DEL] in Delhi earlier this week); further weather-related disruptions to land, air, and sea travel are to be anticipated.
