Tropical Storm Maria, the eighth tropical storm of the year, was formed on July 4. Initially, weather authorities forecasted that it would not have a direct impact on Taiwan. According to a new assessment from July 6, the storm may transform into a typhoon and reach northern Taiwan by Monday, July 9. Maria could pass within 500 to 700 kilometers (310 to 430 mi) of the island and have a moderate effect. Meanwhile, the island is exposed to high temperatures ranging between 30 to 35 degrees Celsius; On July 5, authorities issued an orange heat warning for Taipei City, where the mercury might climb up to 36 degrees.
