Czech Republic: Rabbit fever outbreak reported around Česká Lípa

Rabbit fever (tularemia) outbreak ongoing around Česká Lípa as of early July; avoid contact with rabbits and other animals

Informational

Event

Czech health officials have identified an outbreak of tularemia, also known as rabbit fever, in Česká Lípa (Liberec province), Dubice (Ústí nad Labem province), and Dolní Libchava (Liberec province) as of early July. As a preventative measure, the local government has banned possession and transport of rabbits.

Context

Rabbit fever most frequently spreads to humans via tick bites or through contact with a sick or dead infected animal. If identified in its early stages, tularemia can be treated with antibiotics; however, if treatment is delayed, life-threatening complications may result. Symptoms in humans generally include high fever, rash, or red lesions on the skin.

Advice

All those present in affected areas are advised to take the necessary measures to protect themselves: avoid contact with rabbits and other animals you do not know, take preventive measures to avoid tick bites, and wash hands/disinfect surfaces frequently. If presenting with the above symptoms, seek immediate medical attention.
