Warning

Event

Typhoon Maria weakened as it approached Taiwan, passing north of the island on Tuesday, July 10. Despite bringing heavy rain and winds, no major damages had been reported as of Wednesday afternoon (local time). The Taiwanese authorities had previously warned of possible floods and landslides and had carried out evacuations as a precaution. Thousands of households were temporarily deprived of power, while air, sea, and road transportation faced disruptions.

Context

Taiwan is prone to violent tropical storms and typhoons through the summer (e.g. 100 people injured in 2017 when Typhoon Nesat battered the island). Maria was the first typhoon of the 2018 season.

Advice

Individuals present in the north of Taiwan are advised to monitor the situation, minimize outdoor activities, anticipate impact on transportation, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
