Clashes between students and police break out during protest in Tegucigalpa July 25; further protests likely in coming days

Clashes broke out between protesters and police during a demonstration organized by the MEU student organization (Movimiento Estudiantil Universitario) in the capital Tegucigalpa on Wednesday, July 25, around 14:00 (local time). Students had blocked traffic on Bulevar Suyapa near the UNAH campus (Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Honduras), which reportedly led to the confrontation. Police used tear gas to disperse the crowd and two officers were reportedly injured. Further such protests by students, as well as by transportation workers, are possible in the coming days.
Transportation unions have held a series of strikes, accompanied by roadblocks, in recent days. The strike was suspended for 48 hours to facilitate negotiations with the government. However, further strikes - by municipal bus drivers, taxi drivers, and moto-taxi drivers - are possible beginning on July 26.
