South Africa: Court removes Kimberley mayor following violent protests

Court orders the removal of Kimberley mayor July 31 following violent protests; additional demonstrations possible

The Northern Cape High Court ordered Kimberley Municipal Mayor Mangaliso Matika to vacate his seat on Tuesday, July 31. The courts upheld a vote of no confidence taken last Wednesday, July 25, following two weeks of protests, culminating with a city-wide shutdown on Monday, July 30. Protesters barricades some roads with burning tires and there were some reports of looting and vandalism, particularly in the Galeshewe neighborhood. Around 75 schools were closed on Monday due to the violence.

The courts have given Matika until August 22 to step down from his post. There has been no comment from Matika as of Wednesday, August 1. If he refuses to cede his position, further protests in the area possible.
