Nepal: Shutdown strike in eastern districts August 8
Normal life impacted by a shutdown strike in several eastern districts August 8
Event
Normal life was impacted in nine eastern districts (e.g. Ilam) of the country on Wednesday, on August 8, due to a shutdown strike. The strike was enforced by several groups - including the Rastriya Janamukti Party, Federal Limbuwan Party Nepal, and Limbuwan National Revolutionary Party - to protest a perceived lack of rights guaranteed to certain ethnic groups by the constitution. Protesters also demanded that Province 1 be renamed. This mobilization had a near-paralyzing impact on road traffic.
Advice
Individuals present in eastern Nepal are advised to stay away from
public gatherings and rallies, anticipate road diversions, and adhere to
any instructions issued by local authorities.
