South Korea: Typhoon Soulik exits the Korean peninsula August 24 /update 3

Event

Typhoon Soulik exited South Korea on Friday, August 24, after having made landfall on the evening prior near the city of Mokpo. Torrential rain was recorded on Jeju island (over 100 cm [40 in] August 22-24), Jindo (30 cm [12 in]), and Gangjin (South Jeolla province; 24 cm [9 in]). One person has been reported missing and several others injured. While destruction was limited, some buildings sustained damages and localized power outages occurred in the south. Seoul and its surroundings were not directly affected by the storm.

Context

As of August 24, all typhoon-related warnings issued by the South Korean weather authorities have been canceled, with the exception of those for Ulleung and Dokdo.

Individuals present in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate strong winds and heavy rain (and associated transportation and power disruptions), and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
