South Korea: Sinkhole in south-western Seoul (Aug. 31)

Event

On August 31, a large sinkhole opened in Seoul near a construction site, leading authorities to evacuate hundreds of people living nearby. The 30-meter by 10-meter hole opened early in the morning (local time) in Gasan-dong area (south-western Seoul). No damage or injuries were reported. Recent torrential rains may have loosened up the soil and caused the hole.

Context

South Korea has suffered heavy downpours in recent days. On August 29, up to 25 cm (10 in) of rain fell in the northern districts of Seoul. Goyang in Gyeonggi Province (north of Seoul) received over 50 cm (20 in) of water from August 28 to August 29.

Individuals present in Seoul are advised to avoid nonessential travels to Gasan-dong area, to anticipate associated road hazards, and to adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities.
