Saudi Arabia: At least three ballistic missiles fired from Yemen Sep. 10-11 /update 14

Event

On Monday, September 10, Houthi militants fired a Badr-1 short-range ballistic missile at the Mustahdath Saudi military base in Asir region. According to the Houthi-controlled Saba news outlet, the missile hit the base leading to significant damage. In a separate attack, Saudi state media announced that two missiles fired from Yemen were intercepted by missile defense systems in Jizan province on Tuesday, September 11; no associated casualties or damages were reported.

Context

On September 5, shrapnel from an intercepted missile injured at least 37 people in Najran. Saudi air defense systems intercepted the missile, which was fired from Sa'ada province in northern Yemen, above the Saudi city of Najran.

Saudi sources estimate that Houthi militias have fired over 185 missiles at Saudi Arabia since 2015, when Saudi Arabia began backing the Yemeni government against Houthi separatists in the Yemeni Civil War. Southern Saudi Arabia is a frequent target of Houthi missile attacks, and Riyadh has also witnessed several missile attacks in the last several months.
