Thailand: Downpours and flooding expected until Sep. 17

Downpours and local flooding expected until September 17; 53 provinces concerned

Warning

Event

According to the Thai meteorological authorities, heavy downpours and rough seas are expected through September 17 in Thailand. The rain is brought by two major storm systems currently moving towards southern China, including Tropical Storm Barijat which is expected to reach Hong Kong and the Chinese provinces of Guangdong, and Hainan provinces between September 13 and September 14. A total of 53 provinces across Thailand (17 in the north, 18 in the northeast, eight on the central plains, four in the east, and six in the south) may be affected by floods over the coming days.

Advice

Individuals present in abovementioned regions are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation and power disruptions, obey instructions issued by the local authorities, and avoid flood-prone areas until the situation stabilizes. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
