Gunmen killed three people and wounded seven others in Mexico City around 22:00 (local time) on Friday, September 14. The shooting took place at the northeast corner of Plaza Garibaldi, a popular tourist destination and nightlife location commonly filled with mariachis. According to police, the perpetrators were dressed as mariachis and opened fire near the corner of Honduras and Callejón de la Amargura streets before fleeing on motorcycles.

Mexico City saw a 14 percent increase in homicides in the first four months of 2018 compared to the same period in 2017, with an average of 3.1 murders per day. Statistics for the entire country show that 2017 was the most violent year on record.
