Uganda: Bobi Wine’s brother arrested ahead of return to Uganda Sep. 20 /update 8

The brother of opposition leader Bobi Wine was reportedly arrested in the morning of Thursday, September 20, as he went to meet the returning politician at Entebbe International Airport (EBB). Robert Kyagulanyi, better known as Bobi Wine, is expected to arrive at EBB on Thursday following three weeks of medical treatment in the US. Police banned "unlawful rallies, processions, and assemblies" and announced that only his immediate family would be allowed to receive him at the airport. A heavy security presence, including checkpoints, has been reported along the Entebbe-Kampala road. Bobi Wine stated his intention to travel to Najjanankumbi, Kamwokya, and Kasangati to visit with family following his arrival. Despite the ban, rallies and protests in support of Bobi Wine and his brother are possible in the coming hours, particularly in Kampala and the abovementioned areas. Violent clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Context

Bobi Wine, a former musician and current opposition member of parliament, was arrested on August 14 after protesters threw stones at the convoy of President Yoweri Museveni. He was charged with treason and released on bail on August 27. According to his lawyer, he was severely beaten during his arrest and while in custody, leading him to seek treatment in the US on August 31. His supporters staged several protests during his detention, leading to violent clashes with security forces and the firing of live ammunition and tear gas.
