On the evening (local time) of Tuesday, September 25, officials at Pisa International Airport (PSA) announced that the airport would remain closed to civilian air traffic on Wednesday, September 26, from 07:00 until the end of firefighting operations in the area. The airport was closed and evacuated of all passengers and personnel on the afternoon of September 25.
As of Tuesday evening, at least 700 people have evacuated the towns of Calci and Vicopisano. The fire initially broke out in Monte Serra before spreading to the municipalities of Calci, Montemagno, and San Lorenzo e la Torre overnight on September 24-25. Further evacuations and road closures are possible as firefighters work to contain the fire.
