Thousand supporters of President Paul Biya held a peaceful march in Yaoundé on Thursday, September 27, in support of his run for a seventh term with his ruling Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (RDPC; Rassemblement démocratique du Peuple Camerounais) in the upcoming presidential elections being held on Sunday, October 7. Further such demonstrations, as well as political rallies and associated transportation disruptions, are to be expected in the coming days throughout the country, notably in Yaoundé and Douala.
Context
Some 6.6 million electors are called to the polls to choose their next president. The official electoral campaign period ahead elections runs from September 22 to October 6. Candidates include Biya, in office since 1982, and eight others. The main opposition party, Social Democratic Front (SDF), will be running Joshua Osih.
