Ethiopia: 44 killed in intercommunal violence in western Ethiopia Sep. 29-30

Event

Violent intercommunal clashes broke out along the border between Oromia and Benishangul-Gumuz regions on Saturday, September 29, and Sunday, September 30. According to local sources, at least 44 people were killed in the clashes, which reportedly occurred after gunmen attacked members of the Oromo community residing in Benishangul-Gumuz. Over 70,000 more people have fled the area since Wednesday, September 26, due to rising violence. A heightened security presence in the region is to be anticipated in the coming days, and further clashes cannot be ruled out.

Context

The current bout of violence in the region reportedly erupted after four high-ranking local officials were killed by unidentified gunmen in fighting that began on September 26.
