United States: Authorities foil alleged election day bomb plot

On Thursday, October 11, authorities announced they had arrested a man and seized a 91-kg (200-lb) homemade explosive device on October 9 in Tappan (New York state). The suspect reportedly planned to detonate himself on the National Mall in Washington, DC, on November 6 to coincide with the US midterm elections. Although authorities have indicated that there is not believed to be any further threat linked to this plot, an increased security presence at key sites across the country is possible in the days surrounding next month's elections.

The suspect sought to draw attention to his beliefs of "sortition," or the random selection of individuals for government positions. Although prosecutors indicated the suspect acted alone, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is reportedly currently investigating roughly 1000 homegrown terror threats across the country.
