Iraq: Car bomb attack kills four near Mosul October 23

A car bomb detonated near a restaurant and a market in the northern town of Qayyara (near Mosul) on Tuesday, October 23, killing at least four people and injuring 15 others. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, although the Islamic State (IS) has conducted similar attacks in the area. A heightened security presence can be expected near the blast zone in the near-term.

Context

Although Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi claimed victory over IS in December 2017, the group retains a degree of freedom of movement in parts of the country, particularly in western and northern Iraq, and IS militants continue to carry out attacks.
