Chad: University student protest in N’djamena October 22

Event

Security forces dispersed protesting university student in the capital N'Djamena on Monday, October 22. Protests also reportedly took place in other cities across the country. The protests took place amid an ongoing indefinite national student strike launched to demand better school conditions and the payment of scholarships owed since 2016. Students have said they intend to continue the strike until the government addresses their concerns. Further protests are thus likely.

Context

In 2016, the government - as part of austerity measures to reduce public spending amid the fall in oil prices - canceled student scholarships with the aim of using the money to improve conditions at universities (libraries, cafeterias, transportation, etc.). However, these promised investments have not materialized as of late 2018.
