Myanmar: Arrested journalists freed on bail October 26 /update 1

Three Burmese journalists arrested on incitement charges on October 10 were freed on bail on Friday, October 26. They had been arrested after the publication of an article perceived as being critical towards the regional government of Yangon. Given the government’s tight grip on the media, further arrests of journalists can be expected in the near-term, which may prompt social unrest.

Context

The civilian-led administration is increasingly perceived by the political opposition and the international community as cracking down on the media and freedom of expression. Notably, two journalists were sentenced to seven years in jail in September for violating Myanmar's Official Secrets Act during an investigation of a Rohingya massacre.
