Cyprus: Rival leaders agree to open two checkpoints Oct. 26
Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders agree to open two new checkpoints along the militarized border October 26
Event
During a meeting on Friday, October 26, Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci agreed to open two new checkpoints along the militarized border that splits the communities. Anastasiades and Akinci met at the UN compound on the island as part of an effort to restart reunification negotiations. According to the UN, the crossing points at Lefka/Aplici and Dherynia/Derinya will open on November 12. Further talks between the rival sides may take place in the coming months.
Context
There are currently seven checkpoints that along the ceasefire line that separates the Greek and Turkish sides of the country. UN-led peace talks between the two sides broke down in July 2017 and there has not been an official meeting since negotiations ended. The two new crossing points are the first to be opened since 2010 and are intended to help improve trust between the two communities.
