5000 people protest decision to suspend construction of new Mexico City airport; further protests possible in near term

Informational

Event

On Sunday, November 11, some 5000 people staged a demonstration in Mexico City to protest President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador's (AMLO) decision to suspend the construction on a new airport near Texcoco in the Mexico City region. The protest took place between the Ángel de la Independencia and the Zócalo. Further associated demonstrations are possible in the near term.

Context

President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced in late October that construction underway on a new airport in the Mexico City region would be suspended definitively following a recent referendum on the issue. Money would instead be diverted to refurbish existing airports and add two runways at Santa Lucía Air Force Base.

Individuals in Mexico are advised to avoid any related protests as a precaution.
