Warning

Event

The official electoral campaign period ahead of the December 23 presidential election will run from November 22. During this period, an increase in political rallies and demonstrations, as well as associated transportation disruptions, is to be expected throughout the country, notably in the capital Kinshasa. Main flashpoints for such gatherings include political party headquarters - e.g. the headquarters of the opposition UPDS party (Union for Democracy and Social Progress) in the Limete area of Kinshasa - and the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) headquarters located in the Gombe area of the capital. Outbreaks of violent unrest cannot be ruled out.

Context

Candidates include incumbent President Joseph Kabila's chosen successor Emmauel Ramanazi Shadary, Martin Fayulu of the ECiDé party (Engagement for Citizenship and Development) and the opposition coalition, Felix Tshisekedi of the UPDS, and Vital Kamerhe of the UNC (Union for the Congolese Nation).

Advice

Individuals in DRC, particularly in Kinshasa, are advised to monitor developments to the situation and to avoid all demonstrations due to the risk of violence.
