Civil society groups and local residents are planning to stage a demonstration in front of the US Embassy in the capital Abuja on Friday, November 23. The rally is being held to demand free and fair elections and draw the attention of the international community regarding the security situation ahead of the February 16 presidential elections. The rally is expected to start at 11:00 (local time). An increased security presence as well as localized traffic disruptions are likely.

Context

The official electoral campaign period ahead of the February presidential election began on November 19. During this three-months period, an increase in political rallies and demonstrations, as well as associated transportation disruptions, is to be expected throughout the country, notably in Abuja and Lagos. Outbreaks of violent unrest cannot be ruled out.

Incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari will be in the running along with 77 other candidates, including the main opposition candidate Atiku Abubacar.
