Mexico: National referendum November 24-25

National referendum in Mexico November 24-25 called for by president-elect; avoid any protests

Informational

Event

A national referendum is taking place over the weekend of November 24-25 to decide on a number of issues. Voting will take place at 1102 polling stations across the country and a total of ten questions will be on the ballot. The vote was called for by President-Elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO). Associated protests are possible.

Context

This is the second referendum organized by AMLO, who will take office on December 1. The first was to determine the fate of a controversial new airport under construction in Texcoco, near the capital Mexico City. The voting was marked by technical issues (including claims that it was possible for each person to cast more than one ballot) and low participation rates (around 1 percent of the eligible population).

Advice

Individuals in Mexico are advised to avoid polling stations and any protests as a precaution.
