A tsunami warning was issued for portions of southern Alaska following a 6.6-magnitude earthquake that struck near Anchorage. The tsunami warning is in effect for coastal areas of Cook Inlet and the southern Kenai peninsula. The warning was issued following a 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck approximately 12 km (7.5 mi) north-northeast of Anchorage (Alaska) at approximately 08:29 (local time) on Friday, November 30. Further aftershocks and associated effects, including tsunamis and infrastructure damage is possible.
Advice
Individuals in the abovementioned areas are advised to evacuate coastal and low-lying areas and adhere to any advice or instructions issued by the local authorities.
In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), to move away from windows, and to not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
